Ana Beja da Costa

since 2022


Ana is a full-time Assistant Professor at the School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, teaching Landscape Planning and design studios in the Landscape Architecture course.  Prior to this, she was a guest professor at the School of Architecture, University of Lisbon (teaching at Master and PhD levels).

Between 2022-24 she was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the MetroPublicNet: A Metropolitan Public Space Network to support the robust, low-carbon and cohesive city research project, at the School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa, financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (http://metropublicnet.fa.ulisboa.pt/). Since then, she is a Research Associate member of the CIAUD, Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design, Lisbon School of Architecture, and of the URBinLAB's research group.

She holds a PhD in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology (LINK Program). She has conducted her PhD research at LEAF, ISA with a doctoral grant from Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, with the research thesis "Mangroves of Maputo. Towards Urban Resilience through Green Infrastructure" (2020). Has a Post-graduate Master in Human Settlements (KULeuven, 2008) and a 5yr degree in Landscape Architeture (ISA-ULisboa, 2005).

Throughout her carrier Ana has practiced as a Landscape Architect in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal, with various projects throughout the world (Belgium, Portugal, China, Qatar, Switzerland, Timor-Leste). In parallel, she participated in research by design projects in Ghana – Negotiating Space (funded by the Vlaams Overheid, 2011), Toxic Neighborhood (funded by the BMW Guggenheim Foundation, 2013) and in Belgium - Heyvaert – een Eiland (2012). Both her academic and professional path demonstrate a continued interest and interdisciplinary practice, between cities in development and the landscape and cultural values of their territorial setting.
