JOÃO PEDRO TEIXEIRA DE ABREU COSTA (Lisbon, 1970) is an Architect (TU Lisbon, 1993), holds a Master's degree in Contemporary Architectural Culture (TU Lisbon, 1998), and a PhD in Urbanism from TU Catalonia, Barcelona, in 2007. He has completed post-doctoral studies in Architecture and Urbanism (TU Lisbon, 2011) and obtained a Habilitation for full professorship in Urbanism (ULisbon, 2012). He is currently a Full Professor of Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon, where he has been engaged in teaching, research, and professional activities since 1996. Additionally, he serves as the President of CIAUD - Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design, as a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty, and as the coordinator of the 2nd year of the Integrated Master in Architecture. Previously, he has held positions as a member of the Board of Directors of CIAUD, served twice on the Board of Directors of the Faculty, and been a member of the Scientific Council. Key academic indicators include: - The publication of 2 thesis, 3 books as single author, 7 books as co-author, 23 book chapters, 33 scientific articles, 24 articles in conference proceedings, and 114 editorials of professional journals; - The participation in 26 financed research projects, 5 as responsible researcher; - Presenter in 129 conferences, 82 as invited speaker and 47 by the submission of communications; - The supervision of 3 concluded post-doctoral researches, 5 concluded PhD's and 42 integrated masters. - The participation in the jury of 38 PhD's (17 in international universities and 21 in Portugal), 112 integrated masters and in 82 non-integrated masters; - The distinction with 8 national and 3 international awards, including the Scientific Prize of the University of Lisbon in Architecture in 2013, 2018 and 2023. He is currently engaged in research activities, coordinating and participating in international teams and networks focusing on urban and spatial planning policies, adaptation to climate change, and urban morphology. This research effort is complemented by university extension activities, notably recent contributions to the development of Timor-Leste's spatial planning system. A significant milestone was achieved in 2016 with the approval of the Spatial Plan for the Island of Ataúro, marking the country's inaugural regulatory planning instrument. By 2023, the Municipal Spatial Plans (PMOT) for Bobonaro and Ermera were ratified under the new Land Use Planning Framework Law, while the PMOTs for Baucau, Lautém, and Viqueque are in their final stages of development. He represents CIAUD at the IFoU (International Forum on Urbanism) network. He served as the director of the Portuguese professional journal 'Arquitecturas' from 2005 to 2015. In the 2017 municipal elections in Portugal, he ran as a candidate for Vice-President of the City of Lisbon, representing the Social Democrat Party. He subsequently served as a Councillor at the City Council without executive functions. Prior to this, he held positions as an Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Spatial Planning between 2002 and 2004.
