Metropolitan Public Space: projects and urban transformation in Lisbon Metropolitan Area - 1998-2020

Metrolitan Public Space aims at developing a comprehensive, online and open-access database of public space projects implemented in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) since Expo 1998, as a basis for multi-disciplinary research and urban policy evaluation and support.

During the past 20 years, urban policies in LMA changed from growth-oriented responses to urban and territorial regeneration strategies, on which public space stands prominently, with hundreds of various-sized projects delivered.

Acknowledged as a structural urban and territorial element, public space is fundamental in integrated and cohesive solutions to environmental, mobility, competitiveness and social inclusion challenges.

The project will provide a geo-referenced identification, mapping, systematization and critical discussion of the various types, scales, funding and institutional frameworks of recent public space project delivery in LMA, with the support of Municipalities’ and other partners, bridging university and civil society.
